Hi List...
>Hank pointed out that the troop seats were mounted so they opened
>outward. He thought it might have been set up as a field mess truck before
>turn in.
The center-mounted seats were used primarily in combat, but could have
been used for probably other applications as well as Hank mentioned.
TB 9-2320-209-30/4 "provides instructions for the fabrication and
installation of center-mounted troop seats by direct support
maintenance personnel. This seating arrangement will enable troops to
face outward to provide increased visibility of roadside and reduce
the hazards of ambush."
"The troop seats will be installed only at WABTOC/WABCONARC for use in
certain combat zones."
TB 9-2320-209-30/4 describes how to perform this modification and even
how to fabricate all the parts yourself. You can move your existing
troop seats from the outboard mountings to the new inboard mountings.
You could even add a second set of seats in the center mountings to
your existing outboard seating to double your deuce's troop capacity
(this is great for parade vehicles even though the leg room is
reduced).
You can get this TB from LOGSA, or from my server at:

Enjoy!
