I have two WWII ammo cans, each marked "Cal..30 Ammunition Box M1", one is a
M-1 box and the other is shown in the Ordnance catalog as a M1A1. The M1A1
differs from the more common M1 can in having a latch on the bottom end of
the open end, (below the latching mechanism that hold the box closed)
presumably to fit
a particular mount. My question is: What was the intended application of this
box?
( The above mentioned boxes fit the .30 cal MG mounts that can be attached to
many historic military vehicles, thus this post DOES pertain to the
restoration and display of historic military vehicles)
