Hello List,
Here is an update on where I am with my vehicle. If you recall, I was
having difficulty getting my vehicle to start when it hadn't run for a
day or so. After playing around with a couple of old carbs I had laying
around, I broke down and bought an NOS one. This carb ran horribly the
jeep was missing almost every revolution, I pulled the plugs cleaned
them up one were really wet so I popped the little solder bead off the
mixture and richened it up, that was the trick, it smoothed right out
and purred with only an occasional miss maybe once or twice a minute (I
believe this is pretty normal) Unfortunately I was still not able to
start other than push starting it. I pulled the valve cover replaced
the gasket and sealed it up tight with heat RTV my logic being perhaps I
have a vacuum leak and fuel is not getting to the cylinders through the
intake. I still have the same problem. Another thing is that the
vehicle idles almost perfectly, but under load I hear a frapping sound
almost like it is missing? Also when I accelerate the engine it seems
to hesitate and then miss a bit. Is it still too lean? I believe the
distributor uses a mechanical advance, could it be the timing? As to
the starting question I wonder if my batteries are not turning the
starter fast enough, the batteries are 6 years old and it does sound
like it's barely turning. How do I tell if the fuel mixture is right I
seem to remember something about making it rich until the engine gets a
bit rough and then lean it out a 1/4 or 1/5 turn? How can I check for
vacuum leaks? Anything else I should be checking?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony
