The preferred way, the way the TM says, is leave pulled out.
The reason is, without that pulled out (it is a mechanical fuel shut off) if
the truck rolls in gear, it starts. Whether it is bumped by another vehicle,
or rolls down a hill. And just think how easy a Multifuel starts.
In the case of a deuce in reasonably good condition, the position of the main
electrical switch, or even battery disconnect is immaterial to the truck
running. If the pump and fuel lines are in good shape, the supply pump in the
side of the injection pump can draw fuel from the tank without the intank
pump running. All that is left is turning the engine over for it to start.
A runaway deuce can do a lot of damage.

Hope this helps,
David
