If the load is very heavy, the aircraft can go through a zero G (gravity)
maneuver. This is because the load moves the center of gravity aft of the a
center of lift from the wing and the aircraft pitches up. When low to the
ground, a zero G pitch up condition, can be quite dangerous, because the
aircraft starts to fall. Therefore the total weight of items being LAPES-ed
tend to be on the lower end of the scale relative to what can be airdropped
at altitude.

Have actually been in a c130 during LAPES.. It's quite freaky when the load
shifts and finally drops from the plane.. WOW

The "drag it out the back" system is called LAPES: Low Altitude Parachute
Extraction System.
Used extensively on C-130's,
