Ron, and list,

When I bought my 1954 M38A1, I found out that it didn't have data plates.

It had them during it's service to the United States, and Civil Defense. It
was later sold to a Civilian owner who, did not take care of it. (Actually
crashed it several times, and blew the engine).

It was then sold off to another party who wanted to fix it up, and restore
it. He began by removing the engine (and unfortunately tossed it away) the
tranny, data plates, and other minor parts. He then gave it to his brother
some years later, and had LOST THE DATA PLATES over time. It then sat under
this third Civilian owner for well over 20 years, before I came along to
pick it up.

That's my story to how my Jeep is missing it's data plates. What would I
need to do to get this licensed for the state of California. Would they give
me a VIN? Should I use the engine's number? I still need to purchase the
engine, and I do have a license plate already (The first character is an "E"
inside of a hexagon... What is that for?)

Subject: [MV] Missing Data Plates

Has anyone ever figured out how all of the data plates on the DRMS and now
GL sales go 'missing'? I mean, is there a collectors underground out there?
They are either riveted or held on by 4 screws. It's not like they 'pop'
off on rough roads. Why would the military remove them while being used?
How about all you 'lifers', got any ideas that were revealed over beers?
Like PFC Schmeddly stating while in an alcoholic stupor, "Ya know guys, to
get back at the ARMY, I steal the data plates off every deuce I see when I'm
off post. FUBARs the whole system...HIC !!" ?
