Dear Listers....
remember the questions I asked about the use of amber headlights?
Well, so far I've had about a dozen replies, which I will summarise next week.
However, you may be interested to know the results of a conversation I've had
with M38A1guru Simon Bromley, who lives here in UK. I mentioned the story
about the dozens of M38A1s at Thomson-Doxey Export in the 70s (all with amber
headlights).
it turns out that Mr Bromley's M38A1 (w/winch), came from that batch.
Additionally, his also had the amber headlights, but he tells me that they
were in fact standard (clear) headlights, with the addition of a plastic
amber lens which fitted inside the headlight bezel, covering the headlight
lens. He still has these headlight "covers".
Unlike me, he actually DOES remember what Tony Thomson said about the use of
amber headlights. Tony said that vehicles shipped to Europe (where fog was a
regular occurence) were fitted with amber headlights, as these were supposed
to give better visibility in poor conditions. The dozens of M38A1s at
Thomson-Doxey's had originated at sales in Germany. The fact that M-series
vehicles had appeared in Nam with amber lights was due to the fact that the
vehicles had earlier been stationed in Europe.
When I get the promised NSNs for the amber headlights (and maybe from Simon's
plastic headlight covers, too)..... I'll let you all know. I'm sure that you
are all on the edge of your seats about this !!! (:
Kind regards....
Ken
