During a 21 year hitch in Germany I bought 18 vehicles from DRMO. The rules
used to be that I could not sell the vehicles in Europe, except to buyers
approved by the US Government. As long as I had a valid registration and
insurance, I had no problems whatsoever visiting countries. Once in a while,
a third world country (like France) would want me to bond the vehicle to
ensure that I would not leave it or sell it there. I always refused, and
crossed the border at the next crossing with no hassles.
I agree with the advice concerning the US Government that it is better to
beg forgiveness than to ask for permission. However, Mexico does demand a
bond, as do probably several countries south of Texas. Your best bet is to
contact the consulates of the countries you must transit. Always do this in
writing and carry copies with you. A border guard in Guatemala will believe
a letter signed by his Consulate General and may even lower his bribe
accordingly.
Crossing at unauthorized points with a military vehicle could cause an
international hissy fit and may well get you shot. Driving in Panama or
Honduras with a vehicle that appears to belong to the US Army is not
recommended unless you are heavily armed.
Last year, mid-winter, I drove my Jeep 6000 miles to Deadhorse, Alaska
(Arctic Ocean) and next year I want to drive it to the southern tip of
Argentina. I would love to know how you got on with this trip. In fact, I
would love to know the purpose and duration of this trip.
