Mark,
The fitting that Ken refers to is a brass compression adapter that
allows the tubing to pass all the way through. Some adapters do
not allow this, so be sure you get the right one. Install the adapter,
slide the tubing in so it hits the bottom of the tank, then pull it back
out about an inch or so. Snug the nut to compress the sleeve (ferrule),
then loosen the nut until you finish adding a flare union. In this way,
you won't break the sleeve loose from the tubing and the union will
come in handy if you ever have to remove the tank. You will be
limited to a small line that might be smaller than the line from the heater.
In this case, you will need a flare union of the heater fuel line size by
the suction tube size. If you can't locate such a fitting, fabricate one by
using a pipe connector and two flare adapters of the sizes needed.
