I was trained on these in the army. They are crap. You can setup the radio
and amp but without the correct antenna or dummy load to simulate the
antenna you'll blow the amp. If you over heat the amp you'll kill it. Even
if you setup everything right and get it to work, it's illegal to transmit
on military frequencies without a special license. (If you don't work for
the government, don't count on getting one.) You could use them as movie
props or door stops but not much else. As a side note, if you had the
teletype you could use the modem to type messages back and forth to your
buddies teletype/modem over POTS which is completely legal if you were so
inclined. Forget the internet, it's not even close. My cousin wrote a
program that ran on unix in an attempt to communicate with the
teletype/modem and was rewarded with a fried computer for his effort, so
unless your a hacker god, I don't try it. Don't ask me how to run any of
these, I'm sure I don't remember. Just don't touch the antenna out, antenna
cables, or the antenna while your keying the mic. Trust me, don't do it.
It's a lot of voltage. We were told that if we had to adjust the antenna, to
disconnect the mic and take it with us, just to be safe. I knew a guy who
made this mistake and survived. He was never quite right after that.
