The auto darkening shades are a must if you have a welder that leaves
any kind of charge when the trigger isn't pressed. In my first
sustained bit of welding (1.) I managed to get a bit of eye burn from
random arcs when laying the wire down on the work prior to pulling
the trigger. The rented unit tended to arc every so often. The next
day saw me spending a good bit of time with my eyes closed from the
UV burns on my eyes.

1. A friend had purchased a really nice brushed box section steel
bedframe from Italy. A $2000 bed frame that wouldn't fit up the
stairs of his house at the time. He, my roommate and I ended up
spending 36 man hours modifying the bed so it could be broken down
into smaller components for moving. He paid for the rental gear and
bits. Lots of fun, but tiring in the end. Still, the finished product
(with a few modifications) became the envy of our circle of friends.
