Having had the misfortune to drive from the top of the north island to
the bottom of the south one, I can understand why NZ needs to tighten
up - but on the standard of driver training, not on the vehicles, seems
to be case of fixing the symptom rather than the cause?
For those of you who haven't driven in NZ, picture this: you are driving
on a normal road (main north-south highway), there are 5 cars in front
of you and all of you are approaching the crest of a hill. You and
those in front of you are overtaken by up to 3 cars together who do not
even bother to cross back to the correct side of the road as they crest
the hill. Due to this, as we crested hills we were eyeballing the road
verge for an escape route continually.
This scenario happened so many times to us on our honeymoon
that we were both nervous wrecks by the time we handed our hire car
back. We happened to be talking to an ex-policeman and he said it was
a well known problem...............
Steve - has anything changed since 1996, other than the need for
rollbars?
Regards
Doug
