Ron Voightritter was a company commander under 8th Group in Vietnam and
here's what he said about the yellow nose:
The yellow paint on the nose of the hood came about because the Quin
Nhon Support Command Commander could not tell from the air what trucks
belonged to which units. The Eight Transportation Group was running convoys
all over II Corps area. The 240th Quartermaster Battalion also had a lot of
trucks on the roads. If the commander saw something he didn't like e.g.,
safety violations from his helicopter, he had difficulty identifying the
unit and therefore, didn't know which unit commander to contact to get
things corrected. As a result the Eight Trans Group was required to paint
the nose of there hoods yellow and I believe the 240th QM BN had to paint
theirs white. You can share this info if you want.
Thanks again,
Ron
PS Ron's brother was the main guy responsible for getting 'Eve of
Destruction' home.
