need some help here!

Today I replaced the windshield wiper motor on my 1985 M998 Hmmwv, The new motor was a newer style, and when I put it all together, the crank arm hits on the motor shaft attaching nut and it does not turn....Does anyone know if the newer style motor requires a crank arm with more of an offset than the earlier ones? It appears that if that arm had more offset in it it wouldn't jam against the motor shaft nut....
