It's doubtful that the issue is an electromagnet..
more likely it is the engine itself ...
Good compasses have "deviation correctors' in order
to null out the effects of local magnetic fields..
Look for adjustment screws labelled "n/s" , and "e/w"
You point your truck to magnetic north, and look at the
reading on the compass .. move the n/s adjustment to
adjust out half of the error, then point the truck
south.. adjust half the error again ..
after you do that a few times. like up the vehicle e/w
and do the same routine ..
any boater's book called "Chapman's seamanship, and
small boat handling" will have instructions on correcting
a compass for deviation.. ..
The technique works the same on land as it does on the
water..

Hi List...
I just got a little cheapie compass/clock/thermometer unit for inside my M35A2 (don't worry...I plan to paint the little unit 383 camo soon). I got this unit just so I can tell what time it is, but I figured that having the direction and temp would be nice too. So I thought.
No matter where I place the unit, the fluid-suspended ball compass indicates North facing towards the dashboard. If I hold it out the window or back toward the back of the front seat, it indicates in the real North direction...it works fine.
Even if I place it up by the top of the windshield frame, it behaves the same way...it indicates North to the front of the deuce regardless of which direction the truck is pointing.
What is it under the hood or behind the dash of my deuce that is acting as a big electromagnet?
I have not tried shutting off all power and checking the compass because I just thought of doing that right now. Duh.
Any other ideas or experience with compass usage inside the cab of a deuce? I'm just curious.
