Hi Bruce...

True.

The only specific exclusion in the CA vehicle code that allows one to
drive a vehicle with 3 axles of more than 9,000 lbs GVW (I believe
that is the cut-off) without a Class B license is a "housecar".
However, I have been unable to find any legal definition in the CA
vehicle code of exactly what constitutes a housecar. And that was
using a keyword search on the vehicle code document itself!

This "housecar" exclusion was lobbied for supposedly by General
Motors' GMC division when they were marketing that 3-axle motorhome
they made in the 70s...the vehicles were over 9,000 lbs and were not
selling in CA (and a few other states) because a Class B was required,
so they pushed hard for this exclusion with the CA legislators of the
day and got it put into law.

Good luck!
