Believing you to be referring to a M35 variant, what you are refering to is the forward support for the optional machine gun mount. A long tube is slid into it, which supports the gun ring. Two more tubes are clamped onto the rear of the cab, the channels are plainly visible from the outside. Glorified muffler clamps hold these in place.
