The Gar Wood CA-514 winch, used on the G-742 and G-749 trucks (including the M35A2) is designed to be controlled from the cab of the truck. Details of overhaul and repair of this winch are in TM 9-8617.
The lever on the winch gearbox serves only to engage its truck. Attempting to shift it in or out of gear with the PTO turning can severly damage the clutch forks inside the winch, possibly resulting in a shaft shearing such that the on-winch control will no longer either engage, or more often, disengage the winch drum.
The proper procedure would be to place the winch in gear at the winch, then get in the truck, and place the pto in gear. Use the clutch to stop and start the winch. The army assumes, and insists that two people be used in winching operations. This allows the man on the ground to signal the man in the cab to take up, extend, or stop the cable.
Shear pins are available from a number of suppliers. I get mine from Memphis Equipment.
The proper oil level for the lever end of the winch is 7 5/8 inches below the top of the housing. It requires gear oil.
Hope this helps,
David Doyle
