I'll jump in here and offer up some answers. Firstly the hub does work
similarly to the ones on the 73 Dodge. There are inner and outer gears that
can be disengaged for freewheel action. As far as the axle shaft and the
drive flange, it goes like this; the axleshaft drives the flange. when the
flange is bolted to the hub it in turn is also driven. By reaming out the
splines on the flange the flange just floats around the axle. The hubs and
subsequently everything else from the backing plate out is lubricated with
wheel bearing grease or as the military calls it, GAA. Some might tell you
that you can't drive without the flange in place because nothing supports the
axle. This is not true because the axle is supported by a spindle bearing.

member). He is the man responsible for supplying us with lockout hubs.
