My M35A2 w/w is normally aspirated. It smokes very little compared to
many other M35A2s, be they turbo or not. This is a function of if the
(military) mechanic who set up your engine had a clue as to what he was
doing.
You can add a winch to any M35A2 for approx $1000 to 1500 plus labor.
You can add a turbo to a normally aspirated truck, but still wind up with a
smoker that performs poorly if the manuals, engine and injector manuals,
aren't followed. Turbos (both styles) are plentiful, winches are not.
It is said that the -1C Turbo came about due to the Peoples Republik of
Kalifornia suing the Federal govt. over the normally aspirated Deuces not
meeting the Clean Air Act or some such and winning. Normally aspirated
deuces were upgraded to the -1C variant by adding the -1C turbo kit, while
newly produced trucks had the motors upgraded during production. Hence
the -1C being referred to as the 'Clean Air Kit' or California Deuce.
The -1Ds were to correct the err, side effects of the -1C, primarily the
'whistle', which is not a plus in a tactical situation.
I can talk to my wench, err wife, at 50mph without leaning over and
yelling in her left ear as is required in a -1D. I just have to yell,
without leaning over. In a -1C, bring a chalk board, cause you have to yell
if you are within 50 feet of the exhaust side of the truck at idle, let
alone at any speed in motion.
The -1Cs are what caused the 'Noise Warning' stickers to be mounted on
the dashes of ALL M35A2s. Dumb privates were given stickers and told to put
them in the trucks. Too confusing to say, "Just the small piped ones with
turbos".
The -1C caused the -1D to be produced, since -1Cs being started in, say
Dusseldorf, caused Soviet troops in say, Prague, to sit up in their OPs and
say, 'The Amerikanski's are starting their trucks!' and go on full alert.
Since we were used to these noisy trucks, we would notice ( visually, things
like lots of Migs flying around and large numbers of T54s, BRDMs and BMPs
moving up to the wire, not aurally, since that damn -1C was still idling 200
miles away) that the Sovs increasing their alert posture and ratchet ours
up, and they'd notice us increasing our posture and go one level higher, and
so on and so forth. Nuclear Armageddon almost occurred on several occasions,
all because some private started his -1C Deuce in Nome.
F-4's were kept in the Air Force inventory for so long only because
they and Gamma Goats are the only things that can mask an idling -1Cs
whistle. The Phantoms have to be going 5 knots below the sound barrier in
full burner 30' off the ground. All the smoke produced by the Phantoms would
throw the Soviets into a total goat rope, because they thought they were
being fogged by several thousand normally aspirated M35A2s full of troops
that had snuck up under the whistle of the idling -1Cs at Fort Dix.
In my 'smoker', I can sneak up the street at 2300 hours in 4th gear at
10mph or so and then back into the driveway, without getting the
neighbors( or my wench) in the windows. Starting the truck in the morning
at 0630 was not a problem until I hooked up the 'Low Air Pressure'
buzzer....from 50 ft away, the buzzer is the only thing heard behind the
hedges while I 'fog' the hedges for mosquito control ( they have not found
any "West Nile" mosquitoes or dead birds in MY neighborhood since I got the
truck).
I have to honk my horn before I move my Deuce, if I am around a -1D, to
get peoples attention. My horn isn't loud enough to get peoples attention if
I am around an idling -1C. That's why they invented 'Convoy' lights. So
people wouldn't get mesmerized by the three -1C's in a convoy and miss the
other 100 normally aspirated and -1D deuces coming up the road. Convoy
regulations state that -1Cs will be left at the base, or bring up the end of
the convoy, so as to not deafen the populace and cause them to be run over
by M48s and M60s 'sneaking' up the road. The populace will look in the
direction of the 'tail end Charlie -1Cs and see the convoy coming.
Huey crews wear those heavy helmets because they had to hover and fly
over -1Cs at less than 10,000', not because the chopper makes noise. Think
about it....if you are standing next to an idling-1C, the first inkling you
have of a Huey inbound is being pelted by blown dirt from the rotor wash.
In Vietnam, gun trucks were most successful when placed in -1C convoys.
They were alerted to enemy attack by -1Cs exploding in front of them, and
proceeded to mow down hordes of VC who could not hear them firing because of
the whistle of the -1Cs.
I could go on with anecdotal evidence about Turbo versus not, but it is
a personal choice. Turbo noise attracts a certain type of attention.... from
neighbors, building inspectors and hearing aid salesmen. EAR brand hearing
protection plugs got it's name from 'Early Army Regulation', as in regards
to the operation of the -1C......
Now in regards to the MG mount and accessories, plan to spend a couple
or $3k for that little piece of fluff, if you can find them. They are rarer
than winches....Personally, I'd rather get another truck for that kind of
money.
Ronzo, who can hear his Seeing Eye dog bark directions in his normally
aspirated deuce at highway speed.

Subject: [MV] M35 turbo or not to turbo
I am getting ready to make my first military vehicle purchase and I have a
question, I have the option of getting a M35a2 with or without a winch, the
one without a winch has a turbo and the winch truck does not. Anyone have
any input about this? The gentleman I am buying the truck from seems to be
very knowledgeable and he told me the turbos were really only applied to
reduce smoke and horsepower gains were low like 10 -20 HP. What do you all
think I should do? Also anyone know where I can get a .50 ring mount and a
static 50 cal gun for my new truck?
