The cross pin thru the 1/2 shaft prevents the senter ball pin from backing
out.
Should that happen, the balls and joint will fall apart.
As far as oil is concerned: I use modern oil. (only Castorol). I have been
using 10-40 but
will switch to straight 30 on the next change. I only use detergent oil if
the engine is fairly
clean inside. I ran my cckw 40k+ miles this way and it still did not burn
oil. However, if you
use HD oil, be prepared for/accept oil leaks because it will....
