The M520 series comprising the M520 cargo version [illustrated], M553
wrecker and M559 tanker were developed to a requirement for supporting
mechanised units in the field. In the event they were placed in storage
until it was realised they were very suitable for the conditions in
Vietnam to which they were despatched. After Vietnam they were used
sporadically, despite there being over a thousand constructed; until
sold off.
The Mexican Army are the biggest users of them and still have them in
service.
