Mike,
It's human nature to leave things alone as long as it's working.
About filter change, there are two articles in Military Vehicles Magazine
(by yours truly)on the subject, including a table of cross references for
filters made by a number of manufactures (reprinted). MVM#91 and MVM#92,
June and August 2002, respectively.
Your primary filter may not have been doing much of a job without the
positioner spring before and with the secondary and final filters in proper
working condition, you appear to have been OK without the primary. However,
water must never be allowed to reach the injection nozzles, since the high
pressure steam created can do some real damage to them. The primary traps
water, the filter element only occupies about half of the canister. You may
want to check the fuel tank for water as a precaution. Open the drain at the
bottom of the tank and let some fuel out and check it for water content. My
advise is: Fix the filter situation as soon as possible.
My first choice for parts would be Memphis Equipment, they can usually ship
(overnight, if you like) the same day the order is placed and there should
not be much of a down time for you, anyway.
Good luck,
Bjorn
