Crismon's "US Military Wheeled Vehicles" has a picture of a
Schield-Bantam Crane mounted on a GMC 2 1/2 ton 6x6 model CCKW Chassis
(ABM-51) on page 431. It's described as a two-ton crane with a LeRoi
engine. It has single rear wheels and the crane machinery is not enclosed
by any sort of "cab".It also mentions a later M-series 2 1/2 ton 6x6 with a
similar crane called an ABM-53
I have a CCKW with a crane on it but I haven't been able to figure out
the brand of crane. The engine for the crane is a LeRoi 4 cylinder gas and
it does have a "data plate" of sorts but it's impossible for me to get any
info from it except for a stamped "M14". I've always figured that the crane
was added later as the CCKW itself has a cargo truck data plate. It looks a
bit heavier duty than the picture in Crismon's book and still works quite
well although it's developing some cracks at the base of the turntable which
I'll have to deal with soon....
