M1009 Glow Plug Circuit Question

List,

Can any of you experienced diesel mechanics tell me what component would
determine the cycle time of the CUCV glow plugs?

The vehicle in question is a 1986 M1009 with the stock "J" 6.2 L.

The previous owner wired in a manual button for the plugs and we want to
return it to the original temp sensor controlled, wait light setup.

I know the system has a controller, a relay, and a module among other
things, and all are pretty much readily available, I just don't know
which one to buy to begin to remedy the current setup, in other words,
what component would have failed to cause somebody to rewire with a
manual button?

I already have the gp system wiring diagram from the -20 manual, but am
not quite sure what the sequence of events is supposed to be, like turn
key on, energize gp circuit, temp sensor determines if gp is needed to
assist starting, and sends signal to (?) that controls length of gp
cycle, which energizes and times plugs for a predetermined time, shuts
them off, then shuts off wait light.

Any help from your vast pool of knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
I have been wrenching on gas motor Chevys for a number of decades but
these diesel critters are a new learning experience for me.

Many thanks in advance,

T. Bones Morris
