Personally Nate, I'd go with the electric pump at the fuel tank site.
Make sure it can push about 7 PSI with good volume.
Place a switch at the filter; makes it nice when replacing it,
purging the air out of it then becomes easy, no need to endlessly crank the
motor.

I would also place an aftermarket check valve at the filter inlet.
The original stock mechanical lift pump is vented, outlet to inlet, so if
there is an air leak
ahead of it, the fuel will drainback. Think the newer pumps from GM are
not.

I'll be removing the mechanical lift pump and plating closed the motor
opening.
Less plumbing up front when you are done.

ALSO, the tank pickup doesn't have
a drainback check valve like its later civilian counterpart.

AND, if the vehicle sits awhile, you will get some air either through the
injection pump via its fuel return circuit, or via the injectors. How much
depends on the condition of these components.

I subscribe to "The Diesel Page". Jim Bigley is extremely helpful.
Says he doesn't know much about the CUCV/HMMV but a 6.2/6.5
is still a 6.2/6.5.

Hope this helps.
Ted.
