M35 steering spindel nuts

Cosmo Lean,
No possibility. The nuts are definetly sub standard. Several were already
stripped before I took them off. The studs are seated in a steel casting
with a course thread on that end (fine thread out for the nuts) and would
surely strip out if over torqued. My torque wrench is of the flexible bar
style and there is no dial to set. Also, with experience one can torque 40
to 50 ft-lb by "feel", pretty much.
At the time I tossed the nuts in the trash since I didn't want them mixed up
with my good stock. However, later I retrieved one of them, which I still
have. If I can find a shop with a hardness tester in the area, I will let
them check the hardness against a standard Grade 8 nut.
I'll let you know, when I do.
Bjorn
