Wheel rust...how much is too much?

Well, I finally broke the rear wheel loose on the WC52 - sweated getting the
lock ring off (when I get into the invention mode I'm going to invent an
adhesive that copies the rubber to rust bond - I'll make millions!) and
found some heavy pitting both on the ring and the inside of the wheel. Not
too surprising for something dated 3-45. All of the studs are in good shape,
and no holes have been turned into ovals, so from that angle it's still in
good shape.

Looking at both the wheel and the lock ring, and seeing how thick the metal
is, I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on how serious rust pitting
has to be on a wheel before it gets tossed.

Come to think of it, is that ring really a lock ring? These are for the
combat wheels...

IAC, anyone have any comments?
