Perhaps the easiest way to determine which turbo is on your truck is not to look at the turbo at all.
Instead, look at the turbosupercharger intake manifold elbow. On the small turbo, this elbow rather resembles a funnel. Relatively long, round, and tapered, with the tip end bent down to connect to the turbo.
The large (traditionally thought of a the 5 ton) turbo intake manifold elbow is not a long, and has kind of a square look to it.
Also, with the big turbo, the flame heater nozzle sticks out toward the front of the engine, and the flame ignitor angles down over the intake elbow/turbo coupling, whereas with the small turbo the flame ignitor angles up toward the windshield, and the flame heater nozzle angles down toward the starter.
I will, unusually, disagree with RAM and say in my experience, the starter of LD and LDT and LDS-465-2 (8x8) engines is on the passenger's side, while the rest of the LDS series engines has the starter on the driver's side.
Hope this helps,
David Doyle
