As I'm sure you know, a longer barrel yields higher velocities. Taka
45 ACP round and fire it in a 16" barreled camp carbine, you'll get
much better velocities than you'd get out of a 6" barreled M1911.
Same thing goes for naval and other guns.

In short its a measurement of the length of the barrel. In each
context the measurement unit is the caliber of the gun. Thus, 15" 42
Calibers would be a 15" bore of 630" or 52.5 feet long (15" X 42 =
630").
And the 5.5"x50s are 22.9 feet long barrels with a bore of 5.5" (275").
