M135 Transmission and brake oil

Hi all,

Thank you very much for all the replies and help that I received last week.
I'm new to the both this hobbie and this list but you can expect me to be
arround for a long time.

Based on advice from the list, I got the transmission down and changed the
seals. It will be going back in tommorrow and now I have a few extra
questions.

I have not seen any evidence that the transmission was rebuilt at least
nothing obvious and it was running fine apart from the major leak from the
input shaft before taking it out. The oil that came out was rather clear to
golden not the bright red of ATF even thought the previous owner had been
topping off with ATF. Should I put back in 30 weight motor oil? I thinks so
and here are my thoughts please comment:

-ATF is always red and the oil that came out was not.
-If I put 30 weight in a rebuilt it should be ok but ATF in a non rebuilt is
a no no.
- Mayby I should even go to 20 W oil because I will be running the M135
in -20 deg F up here in Canada since the original manual called for 10 W?
- Non detersive is what I was going to put in to save the remaining seals
inside.

Last question, does anybody know if the Canadian military had also changed
there brake liquide from silicon to something else that I can't remember
like the US? Can I top it off with DOT 3 or 4 ?

Thanks
Sean Raymond
