Thanks everyone for all the info but I forgot to mention that the two part
numbers that I was asking about had the same NSN (2520-01-149-3461), the oil
pan with heat ext has a different NSN (2520-01-163-3494). I think Bruce
(bruce@eecs.berkeley.edu) has it right about the lip.

lip which required a special gasket and one that was flat that used RTV.”
