Be sure you start out with end of hose that is in bottle (clean glass soda
bottle is excellent) submerged in fluid so you do not suck air back into
system.
And if you strain the used brake fluid through coffee filter and you can
reuse it - you can reuse it without straining but be careful of trash - I do
not take a chance on it either way - of course my vehicles are DOT3, so not
so expensive to waste some.

You install a piece of clear plastic tubing on the end of the bleeder and
run the other end into a pan or small jar. Pump the brakes a couple of times
and then look at the plastic tubing. There will be air bubbles in the
tubing. Pump the brakes some more and so on until there are no air bubbles
in the tubing. Tighten the bleeder and remove the tubing. Don't forget to
top off the reservoir when your done.
