Hi all,
Before I start asking questions, I thought I ask if there is a FAQ
somewhere for this mailing list.
My son got me interested in possibly owning military vehicles. (My son
LOVES the Humvee. I always wanted to own a tank.) I thought I'd start
with a truck or jeep. I really like the deuce and a half trucks,
Hummers, and the Willys jeep. . Unfortunately, I live in the PRNJ. :-(
I own 2/3 acre in rural NJ. That's not enough for a tank for sure.
Anyways.....here goes:
What's the difference between a CCKW, M-135, M-35? Just different years
of manufacture?
Top speed of Humvee? Deuce and a half?
Can I own a tank in NJ?
Are non-USA vehicles (tanks, trucks) available? Russian, German,
British, etc?
Do I need to deal with the BATF?
What are the practical aspects of military vehicle ownership, such as:
Storage?
Insurance?
Maintenance? Are they hard to work on?
Parts? Are they available?
With rubber-faced tracks, can I run a tank on the road?
I have limited space to store any more vehicles on my property. Is it
possible to pay for storage elsewhere (insurance question)?
What about vehicle registration and inspection?
Is a tank or truck registered as a "historic" vehicle?
Any shows in the NW NJ area?
How much $$$ does new tires cost for a deuce and a half?
I assume WWII Willy jeeps and Ford GPWs are pretty costly. Are M38's
and M151 a lot less $$$?
Books? I have "Tanks of the World" by David Miller and have "The
Encyclopedia of Tanks and Armored Fighting Vehicles: The Comprehensive
Guide to over 900 Armored Fighting Vehicles from 1915 to the Present
Day" by Christopher F. Foss and "U.S. Military Wheeled Vehicles" by Fred
W. Crismon on order. Any other good reference books?
I hope I'm not asking too many basic (or stupid) questions.
TIA,
--Doug
