While this topic is way off for the list. Lets turn it around. If the officer had gotten mauled by the dog how many of us would be criticising the officer for not shooting the dog?
The officers were heading into a situation with little knowledge and making the best call at the moment. In hind sight it might be wrong but at least they are still around to regret there actions.
To put it more on topic think about how many other times in history that members of our armed forces have been forced to make snap decisions they regret later.
