I thought the german tanks wer Gasoline as well. Their big problem
was letting a vehicle's oil freeze. The Russians (at least their air
force) had the procedure down pat for draining the crank case and
later filling it with warmed oil (after and before sorties,
respectively). I'd expect that the Russian tanks, being designed for
the environment, probably had block heaters of some sort for faster
start ups.
