I might be off base, but aren't most starters we deal with series motors?
Field wired in series with the armature. Some motors have a lighter,
additional field winding thats connected from the incoming stud to ground,
would make it a series/shunt motor.
This winding prevents the motor from overreving without a load on it.
Least thats what I've seen.
