That's an excellent point. When I first got in the hobby I kept getting
that same advice, "to buy a vehicle that's ready to go" as opposed to
one that needs totally rebuilding. Problem was, I couldn't afford a
vehicle like that. My M37 cost $350 out of a local junkyard. Arguably,
I couldn't even afford that, especially if you ask my wife. I KNOW I
spent more than what one up and running would cost, but you know
what?....they're going to have to bury me in that M37!! I will always
value the experience of bringing it back.
And guess what.....that same junkyard has a Ford GTB in it that I'm
saving my pennies for. I located the cargo bed in a local farmer's
pasture. Guess getting the old crappy vehicles is just in my blood.
I have a good friend who is pretty well respected on this list who I've
heard say many times, "Our toys ain't cheap. If you can't afford them
maybe you shouldn't play with them". (that's close, anyway) When he
says that, I just smile, because I know that I'm the classic example
that proves him wrong. (he'll probably recognize himself!!)
Mike Pilcher (always an eye out for more crap)
M37 (used to be crappy)
M151 (used to be crappy, almost through)
M416 (used to be crappy)
M100 (half crappy)
2 civilian 1/4 tons (one crappy/one not)
6 WWII crappy jeeps waiting to turn into one uncrappy one
MBT (you ain't never seen crappy like this)
