I'm catching up on my posts...
As I recall, starter motors are "series wound" (or was it shunt wound?) and
as a result will tend to destroy themselves if they don't have a load (kinda
like thermal run-away for the electronic guys).
Plus, since starters are only designed to be run for short periods (very low
duty cycle), I don't think they would make good "motors" for powering things
like wenches, I mean, winches.
