I would recommend replacing the mechanical pump with the factory electric
pump that goes inside the fuel tank. This requires you to drop the tank to
replace the sending unit with the new sending unit/fuel pump assembly but
has the big advantage of not requiring the pump to be primed as it is
sitting in the fuel unlike an in line pump which mounts somewhere under the
frame. I'll grant you it's more work to install/replace but more reliable
long term. Chevy/GMC started installing internal fuel pump/sending units
while the 6.2 Ltr. engine was still in production. This was the factory fix
to customers complaining about killing the batteries when the fuel drained
back into the tank. It also lets you know after you install the factory
pump setup where your fuel leaks are as by installing the electric pump
inside the tank the entire fuel supply line is pressurized thereby making
it easier to spot leaks instead of trying to figure out where the air is
getting in.
NOTE!!!! This also applies to all CUCV's.
