Rikk,

If you have a 12 volt distributor, check the points. Often they are not
installed properly. If the extra spring is not locked in & as such
cannot add tension on the points. That will react as if the timing is
extremely retarded. Check also that the weights inside the distributor
are free & will spin correctly. That is the only timing advance on the
distributor. It makes a very obvious difference. That M38A1 has a
great rev & should move out nicely.
