It's fine, but remove the thermostat first.
Run it till it's hot, put in a can or two, run it again, drain, flush, and
refill with the thermostat back in. You might have to do this every three
years or so but it's a lot cheaper than pulling the engine. Make sure
your thermostat is in good order and the system not over-pressurised
though.
