what is mermite

Interesting, but looked at webster, searched web, after all those years of
eating chow brought out in Mermite cans, cannot find out what the word
"mermite" actually means. Was it the company, an acronym?

MERMITE CANS
Mermite cans are an insulated food carrying device the Army used to bring
hot chow to the guys in the jungle. They worked very well in keeping the
food hot and clean. They were OD in color, had two hinges on one side and
two locking devices on the other side that tightened on a rubber gasket.
