I disagree with both the resin and epoxy methods!!!
You need to strip the wood bare and then give it several good coats of a
good sealent available from any hardware/lumber store. These sealants are
designed to be absorbed by the wood. Those other methods are simply surface
coats and will actually hasten the rotting.

Also, epoxy might be a better choice that fiberglass resin. It's 100%
waterproof.

When sealing wood, it must be dry, else the moisture inside can cause
problems, and when you do seal it, the seal must be complete or moisture
may get inside your resin 'shell' and rot the wood from inside.
