Bill, I drove it 2 years ago in January/February in a ragtop Jeep. Slept in
a tent on the side of the road. I must be nuts. Then I drove the Dalton
highway up to Deadhorse on the Arctic Ocean. If you plan on ever doing
something this stupid in the winter, install block heaters, otherwise never
shut the engine off. Most stores have what looks like hitching rails in
front of them, they are for plugging your block heaters in while you grab
your groceries. The best guide book I found is published annually and is
called the Milepost. You can find out more at "http://www.themilepost.com/"
. It is pricey but worth every penny. If you drive it at a more sane time of
the year, I've been told to take plenty of mosquito repellant. Do not plan
on taking any sort of handgun, and long guns will cost you about $35 for
some sort of rip off permit. Lots more info in the book. Definitely make
this trip, the scenery alone is some of the best on the planet.
