I usually dig a 3 foot deep hole at each corner of the trailer and concrete
an anchor in it, then use ratchet type binders to secure the trailer to the
anchors.

I have seen similar things happen and chocks on truck - unless they were on
front wheels - even then I have doubts - would have prevented what happened
to Joe. I put wooden block at back of trailer, right at end by ramps - both
sides - if I loading something heavy - yes sometimes load mashes trailer
down on blocks, but just pull up slow and they will roll out.
I watched a fellow hook a trailer type fertilizer applicator behind half ton
pickup to take to field. The he positioned it such that load would be right
in back. This applicator does not have springs, single axle with walking
beam and two wheels each side. I told him he was loading to far to back,
His comment "I know what I am doing" I did let him borrow my shovel to move
some of load to front when it picked the rear wheels of pickup clear of the
ground.

Chock those wheels. I carry chocks around with me in my armored cars to add
a bit of security to them when I park on inclines or at shows. Loading
sounds like another good place for this. I just don't want to come out of a
coffee shop after reading the latest copy of Military Machines and find the
Ferret atop some poor yuppie's Jaguar....Not that it'd not look nice to see
a Daimler (not that Daimler, the other
one!) getting a bit of Jag, but it'd be bad for my insurance rates.
Make some nice big chocks. Use some 2x6's cut them into squares then
diagonally all at a 45 degree angle. Stack them one atop the other and drill
some holes through the center. Rotate them around to get all holes. Add some
water resistant wood glue and paint them a nice bright florescent color. Add
a bit of rope to the two and you've got a quick grab handle.
