OK, just to relieve your frustration let me throw out this scenario. I
drive a 5 ton dump, R6602 engine, gas mileage is measured in quarts per
mile. If things are running right I get about 1 quart per mile, or 4 mpg,
sometimes just a bit better but not much. 5 mpg can be obtained by me
loading it onto a flatbed trailer and towing it with my 1 ton truck.
I usually use this truck to haul gravel, dirt, and logs and all wheel drive
is required. I want to drive it about 400 miles to do a roofing job. The
route is all paved road, not even a dirt road. Gas will be almost $200 as
is. If I can get .5 mpg better I save $20-$25 for this trip alone. I can
yank an axle for that much money if it isn't a big deal. A few trips like
that and the dollars start to add up. Before I go to the dump I put the
axle back in and I'm set. The dump definitely requires AWD.
If I had a economy vehicle like a duece, I might think twice about
bothering to do this, but I don't.
