Subject: [MV] Using oven cleaner to remove paint?
Esteemed Colleagues:
Since it is well past time that I service the bearings on my M1009 CUCV, I
thought I might remove the dozen or so coats of paint on the wheel rims and
hubs while I had everything apart. I have heard that Easy-Off oven cleaner
and a wire brush does wonders to remove layers of old paint, but I was
wondering if I can use oven cleaner on the plastic lockout hub selector
(will it eat the plastic cover and damage the rubber O ring seal?) and if I
can use oven cleaner to remove paint on the rims without removing the tires
(how bad is oven cleaner on a tire?). I don't have easy access to a sand
blaster, and with things apart, I would be afraid that it would be hard to
remove all the bits of sand, especially since I'm dealing with wheel
bearings.... I remember once that someone used oven cleaner to remove paint
layers on the bumber to get down to the original vehicle markings, and this
sounded like a pretty good idea.
Related to this, does anyone have any opinions on repainting the hub (and
wheel lug nuts) black on a Desert Storm era CUCV vehicle? I have seen
several pictures of top-placed MVPA judged CUCV's that had tan painted rims
with black lug nuts and black hubs - it certainly looks sharp, but is it
authentic?
Thanks,
Nathan Wilkens
