Hello Royce.
The New Mexico State Defense Force is recognized by the State of New
Mexico. We are Part of DOMA (Dept of Military Affairs). Doma in the state
is comprised of 3 departments. Air National Guard, Army National Guard and
the State Defense Force. The Defense Force is responsible to take over the
States Military duties in the event that the National Guard is activated as
a whole. As it stands right now we can not be Federalized, but I have heard
that if we get into Home land Defense, That could all change. We are
recognized by the State and Federal government.
My unit has many folks that are retired Military. My SGT MAJ Retired out of
the Navy with 21 years and 13 Air combat medals from the USMC ( Helos in the
RVN with Hal 3). 2 of my LTs are retirees and my CO has 31 years in uniform
with the USAF, ARNG and the SDF. Myself I failed the Physical at AFEES
(armed Forces entrance and examining station) in 1979 due to suspected
hypertension, BUT I have received military training thru the SDF covering
most of the Common Skills Task Manual and other specialized training
specific for the SDF, and IM the S-1 officer for my unit. The men in my
family have all served in the Military and felt that this was the way I
could also Serve my State and Country.
IF you are interested in Joining a State Guard/Defense Force in your state,
let me know. There are at least 23 states that have SG/SDFs and will ALWAYS
need good retirees to help them with their mission!.
