That was my understanding as well but this would make a 10 ton truck is
a relative wimp with a 20 ton highway rating . . . NAW! They MUST of
had a different formula for the 10 ton as I know they feel right at
home hauling medium to heavy armor.

In thinking about it, that previous gross weight is just for the
tractor itself! The 12X often had triple frames so we are comparing
apples to oranges (GW to GVW). Only the heaviest of civilian trucks
carry triple frames and they are in the size class of the 10 ton. The
problem with such a big tractor with such a high weight rating is that
they exceed the weight allowed on many of our highways and bridges for
something with so few axles. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have one
but they can't LEGALLY haul much.

I've only looked REALLY closely at my old M211 but aside from its HUGE
stack of rear leaf springs, it's not much compared to my old POS
vehicle hauler powered by a wimpy 290 Cummins. See the old blue thing
at the bottom of the page:

I haul 10+ tons of Stalwart on the tractor and I could haul a hell of a
lot more if I had a trailer attached to distribute the load on a few
more axles (I've considered adding 2 tag axles on the truck) This is
with a wimpy old GMC Astro but it pales in comparison to a M12X! I've
considered a military truck/lowboy but I'm afraid that they aren't
quite as convenient as the civilian stuff for moderate to heavy loads.
